Cretan Gastronomy – the Cretan Taste Awards 2021:
The newly established institution of Cretan Taste Awards impressed by rewarding its most important players Cretan Gastronomy, the best restaurants, innovative products and most noteworthy initiatives involving taste.
The aim of the organization is to establish Crete as a leading gastronomic destination. The honorees celebrated their victory at a glittering award ceremony held (observing all health measures against Covid-19) on Monday 6 December at the hotel Atlantis Hotel in the HERACLION, Crete.
The big winners
The title "Capital of gastronomy" awarded to his county Heraklion which received the largest and highest number of awards, with 35 awards in total.

Among the big winners of this year's event were the restaurants "Courtyard» and "Merastri», the hotel breakfast Cretan Malia Park as well as the restaurant Mouries. The tavern won gold Cretan Flavors in Aegina, the winery Lyrarakis, the Local Products Store Balladinos and Cretan Oven Daily Bakery.
Club Metaxa Hospitality Group won the title Brand of the Year of this year's event and received a total of four awards (three gold and one silver). The Group stood out for the implementation sustainable policies and her support locally produced and gastronomy, as well as for the Social Responsibility Actions and them Sustainable Practices to reduce food waste in Creta Maris Beach Resort.
Her initiative stood out for her Educational activity "Courtyard" after cooking lessons and Cretan gastronomy and in the Best in Food tasting services section it was distinguished Barefoot Tasting Tour.
In the producers' section, gold was won by the cheese factory Balladinos, its carbonated waters Aloe Vera Hellas stood out in the Best in New Products category, while the Dictamus card distinguished in the Best in Herbs category.
The Barley BunsVardakis", her Salad Mix KABRIANIS FAMILY, the Cretan honey Melaion with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and organic honey Toplou Organic Honey of the Savidakis family, also celebrated their gold distinction.
The olive oil Minos Extra Virgin Olive Oil of the company Renieris, Graviera of Crete PDO of Balatinos, the pasta "Magiri", the tsikoudia MESS of ANOSKELI SA., the beer NOTOS PILSNER and Water Samaria of ETANAP SA managed to impress the judges.
Three separate honorary awards
The Cretan Taste Awards they give tradition and culinary culture, values that mark the honorary awards of this year's event. Honorary awards were given to Kirkor from Heraklion for the traditional bougatsa, at Giorgos Hatziparaschos from Rethymnon, one of the last bakers in Greece that makes handmade phyllo and in Chrysoula Tzortzakis, creator of the documentary "In the Wine Dark Sea» that makes Cretan wine famous all over the world.
A few words about the 3 Honorary Awards
The Khosefpian family arrived in Heraklion pursued by the Turks. Knowing the art of bougatsa, he opened a small shop in Liontaria, which is now the trademark of the square. Kirkor's bougatsa has grown generations and generations, and today we honor this tradition, with an honorary award for authentic taste and craftsmanship that has remained unchanged for decades.
The story of Giorgos Chatziparaschos began in 1958, when he set up his own family business producing handmade foil, in the old town of Rethymnon. Today, he remains one of the last bakers in Greece making handmade phyllo, the art of which he has passed on to his children and grandchildren, ensuring the continuity of this extremely delicate art.
